Build What You Love

How to Start a [DIY/Lifestyle/Parenting/Travel/etc.] Blog

DISCLAIMER: This post contains ads and affiliate links. At no additional cost to you, we may receive a commission for purchases made through these links and ads.

How many times have you been to a blog and thought to yourself, “That’s so cool that their job is to write about their projects [or life or parenting or traveling, etc.]?” Well…just think – every amazing blog post or Pinterest pin you see can be traced back to someone (like you!) debating whether or not the content in their mind was worth sharing.

Blogging is a lot of work. But as long as you enjoy the process, it is totally worth it.

What do I mean by “the process”? It’s one thing to renovate a home, travel, raise a family, cook a meal, etc. It’s a whole other thing to translate your experience and knowledge into written words on a visually appealing website. The payoff of gaining followers or ad revenue isn’t going to be instant and will require persistence. But, if you enjoy the process of creatively sharing your experiences, you have already found success!

So, how do you get your content our of your mind and onto the internet?

There are numerous avenues for creating a blog/website. In my own experience, EffieRow.com went through two other platforms before landing on WordPress. When I started by blog, I went with the least intimidating (and free) option I knew of. At the time this was Blogger.com. At some point though, I started to feel a bit stifled and wound up moving things over to Weebly. But it wasn’t long before I realized that Weebly had its own limitations. Ultimately, when it comes to customization options and a platform to grow on, WordPress is where you need to be.

If you go the WordPress route, you are going to need web hosting (a service that allows your content to be viewable on the internet). Bluehost is an awesome web hosting service that makes the process of starting (and maintaining) a website on WordPress super simple.

Bluehost is essentially a one-stop-shop. If you are starting from scratch, you can buy and register a domain, purchase web hosting, and install WordPress – all within the same signup process.

After you have your domain, hosting, and WordPress installed, you can begin exploring the infinite number of themes and customization options to bring your ideas to life.
