After painting the ceiling, walls, and concrete floors in our basement laundry room, I still wasn’t satisfied with the visibility of the exposed pipes on the back wall. In addition, the space was definitely lacking a visual focal point and I felt like our washer/dryer were deserving of a better backdrop. So I came up with a quick solution that involved 2x4s, pallets, nails, and some paint. We had driven by a local pallet yard numerous times, and when Eric stopped in to inquire about miscellaneous pieces, the owner pointed to a pile of ‘rejects’ and told him to […]
Once the basement renovation was underway, we had no intention of keeping the original basement stairs as they were. They were creaky, narrow, and dirty. Ultimately we wanted to pull them out and start fresh. But as the project progressed we decided to take our chance at leaving them in place and rehabbing them the best we […]
With some lovely white painted beams above us, we turned our attention to the concrete floors in our basement laundry room. Like the other half of our basement, I initially explored every option from paint to linoleum to tile. But for the sake of time, money, and simplicity – paint was the clear choice.
The existing floor was a mixture of old and new concrete, peeling paint, and stains.
While painting the floors was no doubt the […]
A huge reason we did the full basement renovation was to add a second bathroom to our house. A bathroom addition alone is a big project, but adding one to a basement can be especially challenging. If you remember from an earlier post on below-grade plumbing, we had to install a lovely ‘sewage ejector’ to pump waste water out to the level of our main sewage line. Once the in-ground plumbing was complete, the the framing, electrical, and rest of the rough-in plumbing moved along without much issue. While planning the space, I intended to leave […]
End tables are great and all… but sometimes the space just doesn’t allow for the extra furniture (or it does, but you’d rather not cough up the money for one). That was our situation, and after tipping over one too many drinks on the couch and rug, we decided to get building. We knew that we could build a simple ‘behind the couch table’ – and best of all it could be done on the cheap & easy! First step was to measure the height and length of the section where we wanted to put the sofa table. When cutting the legs, be sure to […]
The truth is, we’ve been so busy enjoying our new basement space (and planning a wedding and other ‘minor’ things like that), that it’s been more than a year and I’m just now getting around to showing you all the finished product! Needless to say, we are so happy with the final result of our basement renovation. It was a large project to take on, but we are definitely glad we did it, both for the use we get out of it and the value it has added to our home. Every now and then we will be hanging out in the basement, and one of us will stop to remind the other one what the space used to […]
With the basement construction complete, we began our quest to furnish it. In particular, we knew we needed a TV stand and/or media unit to house some of our electronics, DVDs, etc. I knew I wanted something long, but also shallow in depth. And because I wanted to the basement to feel as spacious and open as possible, we opted to build a simple, open, industrial shelving unit.
